Very brief swimwear is common for both men and women. but nudity is rare.

Arena in Italy make some of the best swim briefs going, look out of Arena Santamarias while you are there, both in the shops and on the men on the beach.

Suits made from Italian Spandex seem to fit best and last longest, so check the label and buy some when you are there.

When I was stationed in Naples Italy with the Navy for a few years, I always wore boxer shorts style swimwear. There was a family, I met living there and had a nice home on the Island of Capri with a large swimming pool. My first few times on the island, I wore my baggy white shorts, until one of the young Italian males gave me a nice fitting men's bikini swimsuit, as thats what most Italian men, regardless of age would wear swimming or as underwear too. I did wear one and really felt nice. I've worn that style or Speedo style swim briefs for many years since, when swimming or as summer underwear.
