Most of the teams around my area are wearing Jammers but a few boys wear briefs. It seems (although not confirmed) they have the choice.

I was looking at some of the team's meet photos on their Web page . Over half of that particular HS team is wearing briefs, as are maybe 15 or 20% of the other teams also wearing briefs. The team wearing the highest percentage of briefs is a strong competitor, and keeps winning the meets by a wide margin. Perhaps that is what is encouraging some of the swimmers on the other teams to start wearing briefs as well. It's all a game of mimicking what the top swimmers on the best team at the meet are doing.

Here are a lot of photos from recent meets. Take a look at them in sequence and see what conclusions you reach. The winning team is usually Century, and the school colors are a red and a blue. THere are jammers in those colors but also a lot of briefs.

1. Swimmers somehow tend to be very competitive
2. Younger, less competitive swimmers are usually very interested in making improvements to swim faster and be more competitive
3. At swim meats in which several schools compete the big question is what are the best swimmers on the best teams doing differently from the slower swimmers and teams
4. If the slower swimmers and most of the weaker teams are all wearing jammers, there are implications for that.
5. If the strongest swimmers on the very best team are all in swim briefs, there are implications for that as well
6. "If these big strong guys are absolutely OK with wearing a brief at a public meet, maybe I can get my head around the same idea"
7. Coach has a team requirement that the swimmers wear either jammers or briefs bearing the school colors but its up to the individual swimmer as to which
8. Some of the big, strong swimmers on the team may wear jammers for practice and squad contests, but then switch to briefs when participating in an event involving other schools
9. part of this is also about gaining a psychological edge by wearing the brief if the guys wearing jammers start to believe they will be slower because the jammer is somehow restricting movement.

the photos you see above shows several teams strong and not so strong that are in the middle of sorting this all out.

Bear in mind that jammers are far more costly than briefs. Swimming is rarely an A list sport like football or basketball. Athletic departments have a tendency to spend more money on more popular sports.

Lycra jammers are cheap but have a lot more drag than Lycra briefs. Expensive sharkskin jammers have less drag than either Lycra and human skin but wear rapidly. They are worn very tight on the body "painted on".
The school may have had a batch of tiger skin Lycra jammers printed for them but realised that those who preffer briefs or can afford sharkskin can move faster. Maybe their next order will be a batch of tiger skin print Lycra briefs.

The tiger skin jammers are worn by a completely different team/school than the red, blue and black briefs and jammers.

Inexpensive practice jammers can easily be found for under $20 about the same as the briefs. Its the high end sharkskin jammers that are costly, but they wouldn't be worn for anything but a very important meet, as they don't last long.

I've been looking at photos of college and high school swim teams on line and I see a lot of them posing in briefs with the lessor number in jammers.

I suspect many people find Jammers to be very irritating and annoying and briefs are the most comfortable option.

Also, the idea that jammers are "faster" is largely a myth and an excuse to require men to cover their upper legs. How many men's "shorts" go above the knee and what does that have to do with being faster?
