Default Rugby Shorts

A while back, I brought up the topic of short shorts for men and I've been checking for updates on the trend.

It seems that rugby is one sport that's leading the way:

My son played in college and the shorts weren't as short as they were a few years back - but still shorter than basketball. It seems track/cross country still have the shortest. The gay shop I go to had a nice selection last year but didn't sell well so i got them on sale in the fall. Speedos seem to be giving way to the square cut, but at least they are still on the brief end of the spectrum

They've always been short as long as I can remember. So were soccer shorts, but in the late 1990s they bizarrely reverted to the style of the 1930s.

I played rugby at school, the shorts were short and tough, they were stiff and rough when new and we had to wear them commando.

Had to? By directive or what? Why was that?

The PE teacher demanded we buy jockstraps or go commando. We didn't know what jock straps were and would have been too shy to ask for them in the local sports shop.
