Smile Almost an uncomfortable moment

I stayed at a hotel last weekend which had a spa and pool. I went for a swim in the pool wearing low rise briefs with 1.7 inch sides.. There was a slight problem in that the locker key had a safety pin, which presumably was to attach to your swimwear - but I didn't want to do that.

I arrived at the pool area, which was quiet - only a couple of people in the pool, and I placed the locker key on a window ledge, to pick up after my swim. The swim went well, but as I turned to do my final lap, several women wearing bath robes walked into the pool area, and then they stopped to chat to each other.

Yes - they were standing right in the way of where my key was. Unfortunately I didn't have any spare time to wait around, so I plucked up the courage to leave the pool and walk right between them to get to my key. It felt slightly awkward at first, but when I then reached the shower area I actually felt quite good about it....

If you are wearing minimal sided briefs and have keys with built in safety pins you may be able to pin the key over the side of the suit, rather than through the fabric.

not sure why it was an awkward moment. You were getting out of the pool wearing a swim suit. It is not like it was a white that had gone transparent or a thong. The 1.5-2 " side suits seem to be quite the norm this year.
As far as the safety pin and the suit. You can always pin it to the draw string or the label inside so you don't have to pierce the fabric.

Well - it was just that the women were fully covered and I was nearly naked. Can't imagine another context where that would happen.....

What's the thrill of wearing a speedo/bikini when nobody is there to see you?

Might as well be naked -- you wouldn't get arrested because there are no witnesses!

Maybe they were the ones feeling akward since they were standing around at a pool in bathrobes. Besides I am sure they enjoyed the view.

After some discussion with a friend on the board I have to say I still don't get it. Why is it so many guys want to and/or do wear speedos but seem to have a problem being seen in them? If you are on the beach or at a pool you are expected to be in a swim suit. It is human nature for people to glance at another person passing by or entering the area. It isn't a look of judgement, it is a look of idle curiosity. Unless it is someone with a striking appearance (good or bad) they don't remember them 30 seconds later. So why the concern about that 30 seconds from a total stranger you will never see again? While guys in speedos are far fewer than guys in board shorts, they still are nothing that are unusual by a pool or beach. I'v probably said it a million times but I repeat. It is a bathing suit, nothing more. Everyone by the pool/beach wears one and it isn't something to be ashamed or afraid of. Get over the insecurities in your head and wear it like you would board shorts or any other item of clothing. If you act embarrassed or insecure in your speedo it will definitely show and draw attention to you.

NOTE: I am referring to a normal conventional speedo cut swimsuit. If, however, you are out to expose yourself in a white, unlined nylon with a cock ring , a g-string or a skimpy thong you really should be ashamed to be seen in public. Those expose all garments are for private parties or gay bars only. If you have a need to expose yourself in public, especially in a family place, you should really seek professional help.

PS Dave. I agree with you. I have often wanted to make the same comments you did on this board but was concerned about treading on someone's toes/ego. I wear the suits at 2 to 3 inches on the side all the time and have never had an issue.

Of course at that particular pool all of the other guys were wearing shorts, so I would say they have greater problems.

Feeling uncomfortable around other people is not logical. We don't want to upset someone whose reactions we cannot predict so we try to avoid their personal space. Wearing speedos we may not mind being seen but do not want to ram them down someone's throat by entering their space.
We don't want to cause embarrassment, we don't want to be embarrassed by the embarrassment we case. We pause for a moment and finally decide that since we will never see these people again we may as well do what we planned to do in the first place but with conflicting emotions.
