If you can get a friend or even a stranger to take the picture, it's hard to feel warm to a camera using a countdown alarm, pictures taken into a mirror always look a bit odd (reverse them on your computer) and a selfie taken at arms length never looks that good.

If a real person is taking the picture, chat with them for a while so you have a feeling for them and when the picture is taken pose for them not for the camera.

If you are using a countdown timer on a camera supported by a tripod etc then sing Nellie to Elephant silently to yourself, so you know when the camera will go off and the song will put you in a happy state of mind.

Make a mark on the ground and focus the camera to that mark, then press the button and run round to the mark.

As this is a speedo photo I assume that you will be wearing speedos, decide if you really want to show your vest or tee shirt in the picture or will you go bare chested? Do you want to be wearing a hat, sunglasses as they will hide your face? Do shoes look right in a beach photo ?

Check your hair, check you speedos are on right, should the string be in or out, tied or untied ?

I you have long arms and tend to bend forwards find something to hold in your hands, a piece of driftwood or a towel maybe, be aware of how it hides your body.

If you are having to take this photo indoors be aware of the background behind you. Taking a photo in a bedroom or hall with a door opening to the toilet behind you always looks a bit strange.

In summer get up early in the morning and take photographs while it's quiet and the light is low. Photos taken with the sun directly overhead never look as good and viewers will spend more time looking at the background of a crowded beach scene than at you.

In the best group photos the subjects relate more to each other than to the camera.

Take several shots of each set making small variations in position and expression. Then publish the best one.

Have fun.
