Cotton in speedo?
Hello all,
I just saw a plaid Speedo from the late 90'slisted on ebay. It is 66% cotton along with nylon and spandex. I have never heard of cotton in a speedo. Does anyone now how well they wear. It is a nice looking suit, but I do not if I should bid or not. I'll be brief |

Speedo underwear
For a brief point in time (no pun intended) Speedo marketed Speedo branded underwear. I think you are seeing that.

Thank you Sebbie,
I am sure that this is a swimsuit, I recall seeing them advertised back then. I remember speedo's attempt at marketing underwear. I'll be brief |

The Speedo underwear that I have does not mention cotton.
My database indicates it was called Speedo Axcelerate. Made of nylon/elastine at a 96%/4% blend. |

Jeffrey Gazelle
Anyone remember (probably now defunct) Gazelle Swimwear ?
Back in 1988 JG (Australian fashion designer, resident in Chicago) proposed his new cotton and cotton/lycra mix suits. They were to be good for divers with extra grip at the waist and leg openings so that the force of water entry did not bring the suit down to the ankles. Seem to have disappeared without trace now. |

in case you haven't been reading the contents on the new suits being showed on line, many have a cotton content.

Yeah, really, cotton
Been a few of these cotton Speedo suits on sale on eBay in the last few weeks. They're all from the UK, make in the UK, so they have to be from 2003 or earlier, as Speedo ended manufacturing in the UK in 2003.
I bought one, it doesn't have a fabric content label, but is definitely mostly cotton with some Spandex. Does not fit as gracefully as a Lycra or Polyester suit, puckered around the legs. Definitely did some "shrink to fit" while I was in the pool. But still a bit awkward feeling at the back rear. They took forever to dry. I was dripping water for at least 10 minutes as I stretched after my swim workout. Lycra or Polyester suit would be close to try by then. This suit is not going to go into "rotation," it's just a curiosity. Colors are pale when dry, but get bright when wet. I suspect they were aiming for a "Madras cotton" look. I could see it bled some color when I washed it in the sink afterwards. I got the red/yellow striped one. The care label notes that sunlight and chlorinated water are bad for the suit. Cotton in non Speedo brand swimwear
Years ago, probably between 1986 and 1995-ish, I picked up a few swimsuits that were a cotton-spandex blend.
[Side note: I am a firm believer that a board like this with this type of subject matter needs to have pics, so I post them when I can. Usually I wear jammers, so this is a rarity. I seldom post pics in racer-cut briefs because I am too fat for them. But the way I take the pics and how I suck in my gut like crazy before the shutter goes off explains why I am a little less self-conscious abut posting these.] I do not recall the brand of this racer cut suit, but the cotton-induced matte finish is punctuated by the spandex sheen you can see from the flash going off. Blue-Stripe-Swim-brief-3 by C J, on Flickr Blue-Stripe-Swim-brief-1 by C J, on Flickr I really like the colors of this tropical print. Another brand I do not recall, this squarecut suit is really comfy. The cotton gives a matte finish but you cannot see the sheen from the spandex. Tropical-Squarecuts-3 by C J, on Flickr Tropical-Squarecuts-2 by C J, on Flickr Finally, this black and white paisley print squarecut is from the brand Sauvage California. Its fabric content is 55% cotton, 35% polyester, and 10% Lycra. Even though it was listed as a size Large and the measurements match the size of suit in the catalog, but when I got it, it was super snug--and still is. speedos with cotton lining
There are several older swim briefs from the 1950' to mid 1960's, when speedos had nylon inside lining. I remember when very young, got to wear Catalina swim briefs that had inside cotton lining. The suit was made of thick polyester and more coverage than the newer speedo swimwear of the 1970's, like the waist band covered one's waist, just below the belly button. The suit fit really well at the time, but didn't dry quickly like the nylon lycra ones of now. After swimming in those Catalina swim briefs, I couldn't keep them on when wet and soon into the showers to change out of them. Being so snug on my lowers the Catalina swim briefs were harder to to take off especially when wet, yet really liked wearing them than those awful baggy cotton swim trunks of the time period. I think the present speedos fit much better and feel lighter. It's nice how quickly the material drys and the inside lining does makes me feel snug and secure, so I can keep them on longer. The only swim suits that I can think of with a cotton lining that aren't seen often, are the cotton lyrcra swim suits from the 1970's and 80's that are seen on e bay also.
