Sewing your own suit

I am interested in making or having someone make some suits for me. I could use some help from those of you who have knowledge about this.

I am trying to find the best material to use. I know that a lot of suits are made with 80% nylon or poly and 20% lycra/spandex. I have a pair of shorts that are incredibly comfortable that are 75% nylon, 25% lycra. Soft, stretchy and as a bonus, show a good vpl. I think this would make a great suit (either brief or square cut), given that the stretch would allow for a decent outline of my package. I mean, that's one of the perks of wearing swim briefs, right?

What weight material should be used? I don't have a clue in this area as I have never done anything like this.

Any input would be great. If you know of where to get some good patterns that would be awesome. Thanks!

First find you fabric, there are stores around that stock a range of swim and dance wear fabrics.

2nd decide whether to hand sew, use a sewing machine or use an over locker and a sewing machine.

3rd Get hold of the Stitchboy patterns, they used to be on the internet but I have them on disc.

Find a synchro swimmer. A lot sew their own suits.

They could help you.

That isn't me, it's even more exciting to make a swim brief or bikini and to get someone else to wear it.

Thanks! I looked up the patterns and the bikini is still up online, but the brief sadly is missing. I'll keep looking for that one!

Does anyone know what type of fabric this is? This is what I was talking about earlier that is 75% nylon, 25% lycra. This is the back of the fabric. The front is the smooth orange at the bottom.

The Stitchboy patterns is how I got started sewing swimwear. They are definitely a good place to start. You can buy fabric either at a local fabric store or check on eBay. I used to buy most of my fabric there. If you're serious about making suits and plan to stick with it, you'd eventually want to get an overlock machine (serger) and a sewing machine. They don't have to be expensive.
