Default enigma

It may not be of much interest to members but I should simply like to pass on the news here that Alan Turing has yesterday been posthumously granted a Royal Pardon. This is a rare event and comes SIXTY years late.
It reflects the efforts of many to have his reputation as a gay man restored and the disgraceful treatment he received to be acknowledged in what seem like medieval times and which resulted in his suicide in 1954.
Someone who should have been regarded as a national hero was charged under the barbaric criminal law of the day yet it is acknowledged by many historians that this brilliant mathematician's tireless work in code-breaking can be assessed as shortening the period of hostilities of World War II in Europe by at least two years and the lessening of loss of life accordingly .
