I must admit my love of speedos started in high school too.
I went to a boys only private school in the late 1980's with a strong speedo culture.
Speedos were compulsory for school swimming because wearing shorts was regarded as silly and childish (no jammers back then).
We had a proscribed uniform for every other activity at school including field sports but for some reason speedos were our own choice. Some of the boys just wore the boring school swim team speedo with 3 inch sides but most of us took the opportunity to make a fashion statement with bright colors, patterns and thinner sides.
It gave me a taste of the swimsuit culture young women enjoy and showed me men will embrace it to in a supportive environment.
I got a shock when I finished school and discovered that most boys didn't share my love of speedos.
