I may not be promoting male thongs the way you are but I have made it my mission to defend the basic brief.
Every summer I make sure I visit the popular beaches wearing a proper brief.
Here in Australia it seems that some guys who prefer skin tight styles of swimwear are confined (or intimidated) to square cuts or trunks.
Sometimes my briefs are plain and sometimes their brightly coloured but I think if the crowd see a guy wearing briefs they will have more confidence to try themselves.

I thought Australians were well into their 'budgy smugglers'. I have a few of the brief made by the company of the same name. Lovely patterns, though I wish they would make them briefer. The women's 'smugglers' have very sexy styles.
