First you have to get into the water.
Get into slightly deeper water and start to feel your bodies buoyancy as you stand on tip toes.
Put on some goggles and learn to get your face in the water.
Learn to blow out (through your mouth) while your face is under water then breath in (through your mouth) with your face in the air. Doing this in the wrong order will cause a choking reaction.
Have fun and get used to the water.
All the swimmers in the pool will know your are a beginner, respect you for learning to swim as an adult. They've all been through what your going through and will understand.
