There are plenty of swim thongs available for men, however a swim g string would be impractical as it would be likely to be swept away when diving or in rough sea waves.
Don't dive from the side of a pool in any suit that doesn't have a waist cord, on entry it may just slide down your legs and away. Some swim thongs have waist cords. A waist cordless bikini or swim thong will have more elastic holding it on than a g string and will hold up for longer in rough waves. Many women wearing 2 piece bikinis have dived into pools only to discover themselves suddenly bottomless and needing to search the depths without anyone noticing.
It is impractical for men to wear thongs or g strings in public pools or busy beaches as they would be asked to leave. If you have a secluded private pool you may act as you wish and wear a thong or g string, otherwise you must find quiet stretches of beaches and lakes so remote that no one will be upset. Other sun worshippers on these remote and quiet beaches are liable to be naked and instead of looking indecent and trying too hard (on the town beach) you will look overdressed and timid.
The only beach I know of where thongs and g strings are commonly worn by men is one in northern France where the local gendarme rides his horse among the dunes and arrests nudists.
