years ago I saw pic from the old b&w muscle catalogs from the 60's. The idea of wearing something like that intrigued me. Being before internet and being young I had no idea where I would get one. I decided to fashion one out of an old t-shirt. I cut a strip of material out of the front using the hem to slide a string through. I pulled it through my legs and cut it off at the right length. Hand sewed a loop there to hold the string then tied it on the side. It actually worked quite well and with the stretch of the t-shirt material it fit great. I wore it in the family pool (when home alone) and as underwear a couple times.
When I got older and found out they actually were something I could buy. Never attack the home made again, but have to say, that first was the most comfortable of the bunch.

Very creative!

I tried something similar when I was young, but never work. Not good in sewing.

The style is similar to the "fundoshi" Japanese wrap undergarment. It can be done with just one single piece of cloth wrap around the body.

Well, I'll be darned - what can be done with one strip of material and so simple when you know how !
What never did catch on it seems is the piece of material which provided much greater coverage and constituted Glenn Bishop's regular Hawaain Wrap.

I find it interesting to use wrap for beach wear !

Before the 2nd World War Japanese swimming instructors used to place their charges in fundoshis so that if they got into difficulty they could grab the strap at the back and pull them out of the water.

After the war the Americans made western swim and underwear available in Japan and the fundoshi was less used.

I have been experimenting with fundoshis made from bamboo fabric, they are comfortable and can be worn by people who are allergic to elastic, synthetic and cotton fabrics.
