This was posted in late 2012 and it indicates a trend back to speedos for swimming and also short shorts (near the last part of the vid) for working out on land: :D

I love the pool shots and the two guys who have their strings out and sailing. Cool.

Every year we see articles predicting a return to sensible swimwear for men, and every year it doesn't happen.

So true - I wonder how many times I have been internet browsing and excitedly spot a headline MEN RETURNING TO THEIR SPEEDOS! or the
many variations thereof in some fashion post somewhere.
Then I check the date - big disappointment - written three or four years ago!

With men's running shorts, it IS definitely happening here in San Francisco.

There's a jogging path "The Embarcadero" around the waterfront and about 1/2 the guys are wearing traditional (pre 90's) shorts.

By "traditional", I mean at least 1/2 way up from the knees and some are even 2/3 up.

Also see my other post (back in December of 2012) about what I saw at the community college pool.

To Fred,Byron, and Calif...Dol...
Yep, not only in San Francis... here in Mopntreal especially during rgeyearly marathon we see a lot of short running shorts.
I agree spds. and short shorts are comiong back but very slowly but surely.
Theres a cafe terrace down the street from my home and I often go and sit there to watch the people go by, and I have noticed that effectively there is effectively more and more people in short shorts then usual.
But be patient, it wont be tomorrow )Itwill take some time) that we will see short shorts and speedos worn by everyone (back in style) )
Manufacturers and sports firms are still overstocked and jammed with long shorts, cargo shorts (ugh), it will take a longgggggg....time to liquidate all that.
Notice on ebay how many swimming shorts are offered compared to speedos (briefs)
Be patient our time will come, let all long shorts be used up then the glorious short shorts and speedos will be back DROOOOOOOOOL......
sORRY ANS APOLOGIES FOR MY MISSPELLINGS.

Good for SF and Mtl. - I hope we might also hear some promising reports for Central Park NY and other cities.

(Louis reminds me of a misogynistic saying, now non-PC, that patience is a virtue, often found in men, seldom in women)

This one posed rather than spotted in regular use - a simple black speedo in an unusual city setting* and worn by an ex gymnast:

*the speedo is dry as the river is not for swimming in and the bridge is left for Louis to guess.

LOL - close - go one downstream (Tour)
The blue-painted bascules are down - over his left shoulder is the Union Flag on top of the Tour de Londres and over his right the phallic object is The Gherkin (as affectionately known).

It is Tower Bridge, an open and shut case.

Don't come to London tonight, the airports are all snowed in, the trains iced up, and cars slip sliding away.
It's really cold outside, brrr.
Dressed up in everything I own except speedos.

Maybe a cold winter heralds a warm summer of short shorts and speedos. It takes an extended heat wave for people to drop their inhibitions.

Noticed a strange new football (soccer) fashion the other day. Long bright coloured socks pulled above the knee, a 3" gap then shorts. Though not exactly short, the shorts are worn well above the knee, giving a flash of flesh.

This is the open case: http://bugbog.com/images/galleries/london-pictures/South-Bank/tower-bridge-boat-open.jpg

Socks:
David Beckham may have started a trend with his long white socks but his shorts remained long too.
Above-the-knee likely to be seen more in training but a favorite with John Terry it seems. Chelsea FC at training in socks contrast mode:
