Some images are so labelled but maybe this one should be Not Suitable For Swimming: http://www.zeeb.net/shop/images/product_images/popup_images/577_3.jpg

Why? I have a couple like that one that I swim in. Both a thong (actually more a g-string) and one with a covered seat.
Maybe not suitable on a family beach or pool -- but definitely suitable for swimming.

.... I was thinking of suitability not in terms of social acceptability but in practical terms of sea currents which might disrupt a good swim !

private beach, private pool, gay resort... looks like an awesome suit. PSDave is right. However, a good sea current and the guy will be showing all...:)

A good string suit, a swim suit in which the fabric is sewn onto an external string of elastic around the waist (which may be in a fabric sleeve), need not fall off in a rough sea so long as the elastic is of good quality and the correct size for the swimmer.
Any swimsuit without a waist cord may slip down or off when diving, but good firm waist elastic should keep it on and up the rest of the time.
Having the front of a suit lined or unlined will alter it's appearance but not alter it's ability to stay on, the leg elastics see to that. Never try to cut out the lining from a suit. you will almost always nick the fabric of the suit and permanently spoil it. Better to buy a suit made unlined if that is what you want.

A good string suit is harder to make but fun to wear, pity they are so rare.

Yes, it was Hawaii.

I do prefer the overall pose of the first photo.

But the second photo has better background. :)

years ago I saw pic from the old b&w muscle catalogs from the 60's. The idea of wearing something like that intrigued me. Being before internet and being young I had no idea where I would get one. I decided to fashion one out of an old t-shirt. I cut a strip of material out of the front using the hem to slide a string through. I pulled it through my legs and cut it off at the right length. Hand sewed a loop there to hold the string then tied it on the side. It actually worked quite well and with the stretch of the t-shirt material it fit great. I wore it in the family pool (when home alone) and as underwear a couple times.
When I got older and found out they actually were something I could buy. Never attack the home made again, but have to say, that first was the most comfortable of the bunch.

Very creative!

I tried something similar when I was young, but never work. Not good in sewing.

The style is similar to the "fundoshi" Japanese wrap undergarment. It can be done with just one single piece of cloth wrap around the body.

Well, I'll be darned - what can be done with one strip of material and so simple when you know how !
What never did catch on it seems is the piece of material which provided much greater coverage and constituted Glenn Bishop's regular Hawaain Wrap.

I find it interesting to use wrap for beach wear !

Before the 2nd World War Japanese swimming instructors used to place their charges in fundoshis so that if they got into difficulty they could grab the strap at the back and pull them out of the water.

After the war the Americans made western swim and underwear available in Japan and the fundoshi was less used.

I have been experimenting with fundoshis made from bamboo fabric, they are comfortable and can be worn by people who are allergic to elastic, synthetic and cotton fabrics.

I uploaded those pix with private setting. Only I can see them. First time shown on the net.

If here people are more receptive to men wearing less fabric undergarment/swimwear similar to the Japanese, I would just have different pattern cloths and wrap around wearing it at the beach. Instead of having a whole drawer of swimsuit collection.

NJH, I remember seeing a mood photo of you in a thong, you were much younger then and it was a very artistic picture. Thanks for the memory.

The fundoshi is a thong loincloth, the Japanese seem to have no objections to male buttocks being on show. To sumo wrestlers the loin cloth is just their fighting and training uniform. The West have become oversensive in this area.

I was young and wanted to be model actor.
It was done by pro photographer, during a model portfolio(contact card)shoot.

Thanks!

Purple fundoshi (rather confusing pic. with a mysterious pink ribbon) for Louis as he doesn't like white ones:

Don't compare the fundoshi with the modern swim brief, it cannot compete with synthetic stretch fabrics and elastic.
It is better to compare it to Aunt Mable's drawers and bloomers from the Victorian era, the type of thing Mrs Grundy would approve of.

Compared to the one piece, full body, knitted wool swimsuits that people swam in up to the First World War, the fundoshi is a simple, elegant and efficient piece of swimwear.
