I just ran across this photo of a group of wrestlers in India:

Speedo style suits are in fact quite common in India. Google images for "Ganges River Bathing" and you'll find a lot of guys wearing minimal suits. :p

 These are the sacred waters of the River Ganges (and full of fecal coliform) - what on earth does it have to do with speedos ?

These are traditional Indian wrestling attire, not Speedos, but more akin to a Japanese fundoshi: a rectangular strip of fabric that is strung around the waist and through the crotch.
Unfortunately couldn't quickly find out what it's called.

The Indian wrestlers loincloth is called a Langada.
They even climb ropes wearing it.

Since they do swim in while wearing it, it becomes swimwear and a valid subject for discussion here. lol

Good post Sebbie - shorts and speedos seem to be the order of the day now.
