I just signed up today and was wondering where most people are from? Is this a prodominantly USA forum or a mix? Also curious as to how speedos are seen in your country?

I'm from ireland and speedos are not as common as board shorts but you definitely still see people wearing speedos, including myself

Hey Speedostocky,

Welcome! We have a great mix on the board, although USA is probably most common. But, what matters is we have some fun. I am from the top of Maine, USA. As for swimsuits, like everywhere, it seems boardies rule. I am fine with that. I love my swimwear of choice and enjoy that I am willing to feel confident in who I am and what I like.

Looking forward to getting to know you,

STS

Northern Nj here, USA

I row and kayak year round, wear speedo brief style every day weather permitting.

Although I am the only one wearing this style, I never have any problem with my companions. It would seem that I am accepted for my ability, not my mode of dress.

I'm also from northern NJ. I always wear my speedos. Don't see many others that do, but it doesn't matter to me what other people do. I know I'm comfortable in my speedos!! Welcome to the Board!

Central NJ here. Does you name indicate that you prefer Speedo Solars?
They are my favorite. Brief enough for freedom and comfort, yet cover enough to be allowed almost anywhere, even though very few wear them in NJ>

A fellow Celt here -- from Wales in my case!
I think we share quite a lot with you culturally in Eire, and as such board shorts/running shorts used for swimming are most common here, followed by the square-cut boxer brief style and then the traditional speedo brief.

It seems to me (based on this forum and 'speedoforum' too) that in America, wearing speedos is a much bigger deal.
While I'm fairly unusual amongst my friends for wearing speedos, some people might have some banter about my choice but that's it. Nobody really cares what I wear! I get the impression in America that it's almost a cardinal sin!

Speedolad, I have not found any more or less issues with swim briefs in America than anywhere else I have been. Surely not the style of choice, but then they are not the popular choice most places. Like you, maybe some jestful banter, if at all. I think the garbage you read on how anti speedo America is comes from biased, self conscious posters who are trying to place blame for their own insecurities. Look at how many here admit they wont wear a swim brief in public or ask if a beach is speedo friendly. I wear my swimsuit of choice anywhere a swim suit is the right attire, beach, lake, pool, etc. No one has had an issue, USA or anywhere else.

Yup!!! The Speedo Solar is definitely my first choice. Also, I've really been liking the mini brief from Little Rok lately. Its cut very similar to the solar, it just feels much lighter (?). I've got three of them that I've been wearing

I agree, it does appear to be made into a much bigger deal in USA at least from what I see.

I'm in Kent the Garden of England.
It's ok to wear 11" side shorts in the street and shops. In the public swimming pools I wear 2" side briefs including orange Aussiebums without comment as do others for lane swimming. Recently had a chat with an older guy (and his wife) he was also wearing brightly coloured 2" swim briefs and said he wears a thong in the garden when he can. The younger fast swimmers tend to wear jammers. Those that wear long baggy board shorts in the lane sessions tend to get left behind and either get something briefer for the next time or stay in the public play sessions.
Kent has sea on 3 sides, the Thames Estuary to the North and the English Channel to the East and South. We have naturist beaches on all 3 coasts. I was at Folkestone Warren beach on Sunday and could see France on the horizon. To reach the beach there is a long walk along the sea defences, saw a couple of guys in Speedos on the first beach and once the crowds thinned out I stripped down to my ice blue 1.5" Aussiebums, remembering not to get them wet.
In conclusion speedos are rare in Kent but you can wear them without issue in the pools and on the beaches, short shorts are accepted, average shorts length is dropping but still too many ugly long shorts about.

USA here, in the (allegedly) great state of Ohio. Wear briefs or smaller everywhere. As the nick suggests, thongs whenever possible. Never had a problem in briefs, and rarely in thongs, despite Ohio's generally conservative reputation. That said, I almost never see other guys wearing them while I'm out. Only when I have been on vacation in Florida have they been even remotely common.

USA, up in the PNW, in a state called Washington, in a city called Tacoma.

It's cold most of the time, but I manage to wear my spandex swim briefs throughout the year as my favorite undies.

Scotland for me. Same here as rest of UK I guess. Traditional swim shorts, board shorts and occasional speedos. My preference is the kiniki range of micro swim bikinis of which I have the full set of solid colours and wear them at times. No issues so far😊

I live in SoCal and I agree 100%.

I actually see some guys (even straight) wear them around here. One night at a friend's community pool, we were going in the hot tub, and my friend was poking fun at my bf and I for being in Speedos when a group of rowdy high school boys came into the pool area... He was eating his words when one of the young guys stripped down to his speedo, as he was probably a water polo player or a swimmer who liked his speedos, and didn't care what his friends thought. No one even made issue of the fact.

We use that same line here in Ohio. I've sometimes said: Early winter, Winter, Still winter, and "I hope it isn't winter anymore" (AKA: the Monsoon)

north west england, I wear square cuts ( or sunga style briefs if i'm feeling brave)
couple of other guys my age wear jammers, most of them wear shorts.
few guys in there 30s/40s wear boxer cuts or speedos
and a lot of older guys who wear speedos

no ones ever commented on my choice of swimwear, the only ones who i ever think might do are the younger guys in baggy shorts, but i swim better than them so :p :D
(really though, i think a couple of them might wish they had the confidence to wear square cuts or speedos)

From Canada here, and a big welcome to the board, bene on this board for over 14 years now, our board used to be the mens speedo fantasy board, at first.
yes the board is owned and administered by Mike a guy from long beach California (BLESS HIM) but is red by the whole wide world, but mostly reply s come from the USA. here in Canada people dont give a darn who is wearing what and where. Surprisingly I would by experience know that this board is red by guys all over the planet but reply s comes maily from the US, THE QUESTION WHY US GUYS ARE SO RELUCTANT TO WEAR SPEEDOS (theres bene many answers to that) WHY ARE THEY MUCH MORE POPULAR IN MANY OUTHER COUNTRY S AND YET FEW ANSWERS ON THIS BOARD (mystery indeed)
aNYWAY GREETINGS FROM CANADA.

All good questions Louis. I don't know why men here in northern NJ are so timid. I know that I have a difficult time trying to swim with five pounds of shorts tangled up between my knees. But most of the time I'm the only one wearing briefs, go figure.

The photos of surf-lifesavers from long ago here in Cape Town all had speedos, but now everyone wears boardies. I wear boardies on the beach because I am a bit embarrassed not to, but I like having a speedo tanline which I get in the garden. I swim lengths in a speedo at the pool.

Torchwatch

If you find yourself in the situation where no speedos are visible on a beach you may choose to conform and wear big baggy long boardies, you may rebel and wear speedos but be made to feel highly uncomfortable, or you could wear shorts a bit shorter and neater than the others and set an example they can follow. Whatever length of shorts the majority choose, select something maybe 4" shorter. Those who remember the freedom of shorter shorts will follow your example while many younger guys brought up with board shorts will be inspired and follow your example.
Be prepared for the day when the majority are wearing shorts the same length as yours and have a pair of shorts 4" sorter than that at the ready.

The main beach alongside a town with adjacent parking will tend to attract people conforming to the current fashion. Perhaps you need to go to a quieter beach outside town that requires a bit of walking to reach. With fewer people there maybe you will be able to wear your speedos in peace.

Recently spent several days at the Gulf coast. Public beach with families and singles. I probably was the only one in a Speedo. Did not see anyone else. It was boardshort city, but I did not care and loved the surf and sun. I think that if you like the suit and love wearing it, then wear it. I did like getting a smile or two from the young ladies in very brief bikinis.

Another recently-joined Brit here (in the wider sense of the Isles) - I'm part-Celt too as my mother's side of the family has Irish roots, although my father's side are of Viking origin - my grandmother was a classic of the type.

I'm a big bear of a man who currently divides his time between London and the South Devon coast, and have rediscovered my love of swimming (and Speedos) again after some years, going to Highgate Pond in the Summer and sea swimming in Devon. I noticed there were a few more Speedos around at the Pond this year as well as several guys wearing jammers. As for Devon, well I sometimes feel like I'm the only Speedo wearer in town - but I don't care, that's not going to stop me ;)

Hi I am living in London, speedos very common for those who swim laps, i tend to vary between standard briefs though use US designs (blame the husband) and an old pair of Aquablade Jammers. Still use on the odd occasion an Areana "Mark Spitz" brief from the 1970's and its still good to use.
Leisure users seem to use boardshorts etc.
