View Full Version : My Own Speedo Line

Hey Everyone!
I have been a huge speedo fan my entire life (I'm 28) and have been buying, wearing and promoting them from such a young age. I've realized after working multiple jobs through my young professional career that I have one true passion and no job or career other than one revolving around speedos and underwear will satisfy my drive/passion.
Like you guys, I love browsing websites that both sell and photograph them, wearing them and ultimately anything to do with them!!!
With that said, I am looking to start my own speedo line in the next two years as I have been accumulating my interests, styles, fabrics, patterns, photos into folders and books for use to build my own brand and line.
Has anyone ever ventured into something like this before? I saw a previous post about creating your own speedos which is great. Anyone have any business advice as well? Ever thought of it yourself?!

First do not call yours speedos. Speedo is a brand, not a type pf swimwear. Likely to get your new business sued.

Social media is HUGE right now with small business. Also, get a useful website (I can help with that). I can't stand a small business with a crappy website they did on vistaprint or Microsoft Word :P

Why would I even try to call it Speedo? That is very obvious as a huge fan.
Working titles:
ROBBED (my first name is Rob)
FLIPS
STRIKERS
PROXY
STEAMIES
REIDER (my last name - pronounced Rider)
All up for criticism. I like Proxy as you can call them your Proxies!

speedorob,
I think you might want to have a title that has some connection to swimming or briefs, like BREVITY or BRIEFSWIM or something along that line.

I'm not looking to make a line that is for use as a swim suit for competition or training. It is more a fashion line. Take a look at brands like Aronik and Charlie BYMZ so you have a better idea of where I am headed.

I see what you mean. I looked at Aronik and Charlie BYMZ. I agree, you could go with any name that sounds catchy. PROXY might work.

But you did in your first post asking about your own line of speedos. Dude, you can't even call your style speedos. They are swimsuits or swim briefs.

OMG!
Why am I being attacked for using the word speedo?! Calm down....
First of all this is called a speedo board.....not male swim brief board. Speedo is the name that has attached itself to the male brief swimsuit. Just like you call a kleenex a kleenex - hardly ever call it a tissue.
Just so we are all clear....I apologize for using the word speedo and when I start my own line, I will use the term swim brief instead of speedo.
I love how this is the ONLY comments I'm getting in response. Wow. I didn't think it would be an issue at all.....lol

LOL Did anyone actually think you were stupid enough to use the name Speedo? When Speedos became a household word for its competition swimwear it seems that any suit that is brief is referred to as a speedo. It has become the generic description for briefs. (like Kleenex has become the name of tissues - no matter who makes them)
You have quite a task coming up with a name. I think Proxy is a good one but I would double check that it is an ok word to use in other languages. You don't want to piss off someone or use an obscene word.
Also, what are you looking at as your focus? Another version of the normal 2-3" brief will be hard for you to break into the market with unless there is something very distinctive about it. Personally I would like to see those super low riding suits like we have seen in a post about Italian suits. They look really great and cover the butt too (The Japanese suits don't)
Good Luck! I'll be looking forward to your progress.

I mentioned before that I want to create a line of superhero/villain under things or swimwear. something the sexy geek can put on to feel and look good. There will indeed be a lot of swim briefs of various cuts, but I want to also create jocks, singlets, jammers and thongs, and even if I don't get all successful, I'll at least have a collection of nice undies and bulge-gear that I like, all for myself. :)

Can you achieve consistent quality and output when actually making your swimwear?
If you intend to compete with the Chinese at low prices you'll be working for their wages in your country.
If you intend to go upmarket then everything you sell will have to be perfect, much of what you make will go into the bin until you can make that perfect swim brief every time, in minutes.
Your first design will have to be available in at least 4 sizes and perhaps several colours, to build up a launch stock will take you weeks of hard work with no income. You will need to spend out on a lot of fabric, elastic and waist cord just to make the launch stock.
If no one buys you will be left with a couple of hundred swim briefs that no one wants, which you will have to sell off cheap on Ebay.

Not only would I buy but I have been very interested in designing swimwear and manufacturing it. My photo business is what keeps me from spending cash on a sterger or sewing machine.

Speedorob86,
You're not being attacked - you're being urged to use caution and you're being protected. Others who have used the word speedo in websites have been either threatened with lawsuits or have been actually sued by Speedo. So, don't feel bad - the guys have your best interests at heart.

I knew what you meant when you said you wanted to start your own speedo line, speedorob. Like Dooley said, the guys on the board are just looking out for you. Dave Evans got into trouble with Speedo Int'l because he named his website speedosexuality.com. The result was that he had to change it to swimmersexuality instead. Not the worst thing in the world, but it must have been a headache.
Area51tazz mentioned social media will be huge. I second that. To build on area51tazz's suggestion, I recommend wix.com. It's a great way to start forming your web presence with dozens of complimentary, customizable templates you can use for free. If you like what you see, you can pay a nominal fee to set your own url address and customize it even more.
Your ideas are great and I wish you best of luck!

Maybe I had a bad experience out of the norm, but I have not been impressed with what I've seen come out of their product. I'd be happy to take a look at a good example if you've got one :P

Just to clear the record, I never thought you would use the name Speedo. My point was since you used speedo as a generic term in your opening post that you should not do that. Sure we call tissues Kleenex, but go down the tissue aisle and not one competitor calls their product a Kleenex. I noticed Corka was referring to their suits as speedos, only a matter of time before they get slapped. I am sure Speedo is very protective of their brand name. I wish you well, but your response to my post has lost me as a customer should you ever start.

I found all the hullabaloo over a simple error in typing almost comical. The word speedo has become so everyday to mean or refer to a brief cut male swimsuit that it was obvious you were going in that direction (I have seen Ebay listings for "Nike speedo") You are obviously well enough educated not to use a copy righted name if you are smart enough to go into your own business.
I am curious -- where are you located? Do you have access to someone that can create your prototypes or are you doing the sewing yourself? I have met a few people through the years that have made me custom suits that may be able to help

Some brands choose the letter "A" or even numbers or symbols so they move to the top of a list. For example (2)xist underwear.

Just a wee bit too much. I figured that you were kidding, but if not, it's also a reminder to some of the kamikaze pilots of WW II and that won't go over very well. What about something like "Brevity"?

I see nothing wrong with Kamikaze, it denotes wild and fearless actions -- similar to how some guys view wearing a skimpy suit. It is also a memorable name that would likely stick in someones head.
As far as any reference to WWII, I doubt there are any soldiers left from then that are looking at or wearing suits of this nature (most are well over 80). If that reference was sensitive, how would you explain the popularity of the Kamikaze cocktail?
