I'm going only by memory, but I believe that brief suits were still common at the 1996 Olympics. The tech suits started showing up at the 2000 games, and the switch over was pretty much a fait accompli by 2004

The 2000 Olympics were the low point. I remember Ian Thorpe resembling a frogman in a full length suit. A real turn-off.

Yes, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics still featured swimmers in very small, tight Speedo, Arena, and other brief suits. I have a tape of the 96 Swimming events, and I put it in to check. What was also interesting was to see several of the breaststrokers not wearing goggles! And, many of the guys did not wear swim caps - several had shaved heads, but many had full heads of hair!

There lots of posters of Mark Spitz in the 1972 Munchen Olympics in his famous stars and stripes speedos

He's a Mark Spitz look alike and not a particularly good one. But, in his own right, he looks pretty good.

I miss the days when Olympic swimmers wore swim briefs not only because the guys were nice to look at. For me, guys wearing speedos defined Olympic swimming. Once the high tech suits came in, it felt like the men's swimming was sort of hijacked and it just didn't seem the same.

I agree with you, Dooley67 - the brief swimsuits were the sign of a 'real' swimmer. I took a swim class in college - and needed a suit. I went to a local sporting goods store and bought a navy blue Speedo - my very first brief suit. When I went to pay for it, I wasn't thinking about looking 'hot' or 'sexy' or even 'gay' in the suit - I was worried that I didn't deserve to wear a 'real' swimsuit since I wasn't a real swimmer (I was taking an introductory class)!

It is interesting that blue seems to be the most common color for first swim briefs. Mine was a blue brief way back in the day.

My second suit was a vertical blue striped Speedo brand nylon suit - that would be around 1968. It was low cut and had 2" sides, pretty unusual for that time I think.
