Forgive my cynicism but the bullshit written by journalists (usually female),
desperately trying to fill trendy magazine space, is not worth the paper it is written on. She mentions Daniel Craig and the massive publicity campaign for the release of Casino Royale became so over-hyped that his "revealing" pic. was, in some publications, ridiculously captioned as wearing a daring bikini.
At least this one has the honesty to admit the nonsense of the socks and sandals story which has recently descended upon us.

We've installed a security camera in our condo building and one of them monitors the front along the sidewalk.

Looking though the videos, I've noticed there are a lot more guys out jogging in old fashioned runner's shorts.

Most of them are running in the late afternoon and evening after they get off work or when it's cooler.

To avoid crotch raspberries, running shorts need to have the absolute minimum amount of material between the legs. That means the shorter, the better. Check out this week's pictures of the winner of the Boston Marathon.

Update on this topic as of June 1, 2015.

I went to Home Depot and there was a young guy and a girl shopping and the guy was wearing 1980s style short shorts. They looked like an off the shelf product. I don't know what the brand was, but they were about 6 or 7 inches above the knees.

Then I went to the supermarket and there was a group of three young guys in the line ahead of me. One of them was wearing what appeared to be cut off Nike or Adidas basketball shorts. Again, they were 6 or 7 inches above the knees.

Two separate incidents in one day of guys wearing short shorts. How's that for being "On A Roll"!!! :D

I only wear 5 inch inseam shorts now, which are the shortest available at most sites but still don't feel that short or revealing -- they're very comfortable, especially in the summer.

In San Francisco, I've seen young guys in short shorts at least three times in three different places over the past three days.

Two of them were wearing some kind of factory made pre-cut shorts. However, one of them was wearing what appeared to be a mid thigh cut-off version of Nike or Adidas basketball knee length shorts.

If my memory serves me correctly, volleyball shorts were extremely short in the era of short shorts for sports in general and got long more gradually than in other sports, notably basketball and soccer.
In beach volleyball most men wear long board shorts but shorter shorts and even speedos are allowed and seen occasionally. I know a beach volleyball player who knows someone who always competes in speedos and he thinks that gives him an advantage.

I always find it interesting when an article uses a 20 year old picture as a reference.
Lately I have found a variety of lengths of shorts when I have shopped. It seems that a happy medium between the long below the knees and the short short like the old gym trunks or nylon running shorts. After the skinny jean fiasco, I think that manufacturers are realizing that variety of lengths is good.

Here's an update on this topic.

A friend and I were riding home along a large street here in San Francisco and there's a wide tree covered jogging lane off of the side of the street.

I noticed a group of about 12 young men (probably in their very early 20s or possibly late teens) were out jogging in some kind of group run. All of them were in 1980s vintage running shorts.

My guess is they were part of a track and field team from a nearby college or a high school. Where ever they came from, it was great to see the traditional running shorts back in style. :D

After seeing this topic, I realized that I have been seeing more casual "short shorts" on men, here in ultra-conservative Utah, lately. Seems to be a growing trend, here, as well as elsewhere.

I would not be surprised if the company that makes Chubbies helped instigate the return of the men's short short to the US. When they first launched in 2011, their motto was 'Sky's out--Thighs out!" and, I just saw on their website, today, an update to that thought, "We believe in the right your quads have to a life of freedom and sunshine"!

They are a bit pricey, but, obviously, their sales have continued and grown, contributing to men wearing shorter shorts. You may want to check them out, if you haven't already.

However I've gotten a glimpse of the section that runs past the super market where I shop and I see a lot of guys out in traditional running shorts. Those shorts look like they are Nike, Adidas, or some other popular brand.

So if you want the pre 90s style, they're definitely out there!!! :D

I had to play rugby union at school in the 1970's when our shorts were even shorter.

For even shorter shorts look to Australian rules football.

Australian Rules Football is a fast game played on a big pitch in a hot climate.
Rugby (Union and League) and Football (Soccer) are winter sports intended to be played in British drizzle and sleet. Hence the long sleeves and rugged cotton or nylon shorts.

In Rugby Union there is a lineout when the ball goes off the side of the pitch. The ball is thrown in from the sideline by a player into a line of players from each opposing team, each side lift one of their players by their shorts to gain extra height and catch the ball in the air. The player lifted up may wear special shorts for this purpose:

Another possible reason is Aussie Rules “footy” is a combination of sports including basketball, rugby (of course) and soccer, all played on a cricket pitch. The uniforms kind of remind me of old school basketball unis in the US, but a bit more minimalist even.

Football (soccer) is popular in hot countries, though. I remember Cameroon wearing sleeveless shirts in the African Nations Cup finals, but soon after FIFA banned that type of shirt. Even to the extent that women footballers can't wear them.

I don't understand the idea of wearing a speedo under jammers or boardies. Taken it's illogical extreme, it's like saying you went swimming naked under your suits.

Torchwatch

Classic racing speedos have a smooth front, they give support while smoothing down a bulge to an acceptable level. Many jammers are worn tight and have a front pouch that forms a noticeable bulge. Combining speedos with jammers seems to work.
Swimmers wearing loose shorts have a similar problem that once wet the loose fabric moulds rather obviously around their bulge, by wearing speedos under their loose shorts once again smooth's over the bulge.
Some of those wearing Lycra jammers or loose shorts over their speedos are waiting for someone they find attractive, wearing speedos who will lead them into removing their shorts and becoming speedo wearers.

Excellent summary and I agree with the reasons you gave, but I think many guys wear then over their speedos because they are too embarrassed to wear briefs. Sad, as we all know what a guy has under his brief and if the swim brief is in good taste and not see thru what is the issue? It is like the towel dance you see young guys do in the locker room while changing, it is too funny. Let's hope the younger generation gets a mind change and starts up the speedo market, acceptance, and population once again.

At school we used to have to wear rugby union shorts that looked like this. They were made by Bukta and started off navy blue but faded to a grey blue in the sunshine and the wash. For normal school rugby shorts they were about the length in the Aussibum photo, and were a standard 4 panel short, with no pockets or front fly, made from rough cotton. When new they were really stiff and since we had to wear them commando we'd feel the roughness of the cotton as we moved.

Imagine 120 12 year old boys lined up and sitting on the grass in our rugby kit, in front of the pavilion waiting to be called to play rugby.

I have read the article. It is written well enough.

Seems that basketball is slowly but surely going back to short shorts:

https://www.today.com/style/short-shorts-men-are-back-spring-t153181

The knee length trend started in basketball in the 1990s and it's may very well be ending in basketball in the 2020s. ;)

About time!
B-ball uniforms are supposed to be functional not fashionable.
Running shorts started short, briefly joined the trend towards extra length until runners realized the extra material was actually hurting their performance with fabric tangle, friction, and extra heat.
They went back to short shorts.

Here's the state of the art in men's running shorts as of September of this year:

Now let's hope the trend spreads into swimming. ;)

... shorts have been very short for years. Don't see how this year is different or would start a trend in swimming, and the men generally train shirtless. Total opposite of the usual modestly of young males.

These are definitely my favourite types of shorts, especially to wear outside. Running shorts are okay, but I like having pockets if I'm not running.

You can have both at once! I just bought a Shinesty speedo suit that has a short-short print, but no pockets https://www.shinesty.com/products/jeado-v2

Surprising that the men in the second video are wearing shirts to train.
Most of the men on the teams for the two colleges near me do not.

The Running Channel presenters seemed prejudiced in the manner in which they made this film. After running up and down the same bit of city canal path and for the most part being ignored they then started grabbing people and asking if the running shorts were too short, inviting the public to agree with them. The male presenter admitted to feeling embarrassed making the film, yet he didn't have tan lines for longer shorts, this is a guy that does get out much. he 's not a runner, he's a jogger.

As a former club runner and running coach this and other videos by the Running Channel are just embarrassing, the upbeat super females and the useless man formula and the lack of anything useful to say about anything is depressing.

Ignore these clowns and get out and run, and if you feel comfortable in shorts you can actually move freely in then wear them.

These recent videos show that track runners are also taking on the traditional shorter look and getting away from the longer "shorts".

...the upbeat super females and the useless man formula and the lack of anything useful to say about anything is depressing.

OMG YES!

I've been saying this for a while now.

There are no manly men on TV these days. Men are always represented as idiots who too stupid for their own good and must be taken care of by the super-woman of the show that has a full time job, does all the house work and cooking, and keeps her man in line. We have a fully grown man-child problem. Meanwhile, I'm perfectly "man" enough to do laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc; and not feel emasculated by it.

Ignore these clowns and get out and run, and if you feel comfortable in shorts you can actually move freely in then wear them.

Again, I completely agree! Who gives a shit what other people think. If it is comfortable for you to wear when you are doing your activity, then wear it and quit worrying about it. Be it running shorts for runners, swim briefs for swimmers and divers, or wrestling singlets for wrestlers. You need to just put on your sport's uniform and wear it with pride!

I found a new convert from knee length to short shorts in the basketball arena.

The latest fan of the pre-90s look is a player named Lester Quinones:

I will post more on this breaking news item later. :D

I live close to two mid size universities and the men on both of their teams certainly do.
They also train shirtless whenever it is warm enough to do so.

We live close to two relatively small universities.
It is common to see men doing training runs.
They almost always are wearing this type of very short shorts.
The difference is that in warm weather, most of them are not wearing shirts.
