Swimsuits preference
1/2" string sides
1-1/2" sides
3" to 4" square, influence by Aussiebum or sungas.
Shorts preference
Splits, 2" inseam
A few unlined shorts I recently bought having inseams so short, I need to wear underwear to prevent fall-out.

VINTAGE TENNIS SHORTS I wore many times in my pre-teen years (70's).
Too girlie I think! Made in Hong Kong by unknown brand or I didn't know about brands at the time too young.

Nothing "Girlie" about men wearing short shorts.
The current style (down to the knee "Half Pants") is just plain dorky (and rather bigoted too). I often call them "Leg Veils" because there is no practical reason for all men's shorts to have down to the knee coverage.
I've emailed many apparel companies and told them (very politely) that I'm tired of the current style and lack of variety and choice in men's shorts and I hope they start offering the pre-90s style.
It must be working because I'm noticing a lot more guys is vintage shorts than before 2012.

You emailed many apparel companies!!! WOW!
I guess people look at things differently. I view "tennis shorts" vs "short shorts"(for other sports) two different things, purposes and styles.

Don't overlook the Mate Gear mini short or the athletic short. They are very low rise, split up the sides, bit look like and athletic short although they cover like a brief. Fall out is handled by a built in sling.

I like two inch sides, brighter colors and prints, and a slightly lower cut on the waist and hips. I am really into Turbo right now, cool colors and themes.
Yes, I do remember the short shorts of tennis. I also still wear 1 inch inseam full side split running shorts when I run. They are actually not as revealing as they sound, but they are much more practical for running.

When I was younger, I played a lot of tennis, especially in my teens and into my 20's. I wore tennis shorts with probably a 2 inch inseam. I don't play tennis anymore but walk 2-3 miles every day and wear speedos usually with 1-2 inch sides under the shorts which have a 2-3 inch inseam. The speedos give me lots of support and feel really good while shorts are roomy enough to be comfortable.

SPEEDOS: I prefer traditional 2.5" side seam racing brief cut. Tyr or Speedo brand.
RUNNING SHORTS: I like em short, 1.5" to 2" inseam. Anything longer rubs my thighs wrong.
CASUAL SHORTS: just above the knee. I remember the short OP shorts of the 80s fondly, but never again.

SPEEDOS: don't wear anything longer than 2"
SHORTS: don't really wear them. Certainly not for walking around the streets, and for workouts I wear tracksuit bottoms.

1.5" sides are the best. It's the perfect amount of fabric on the side the serve it's function plus it grabs attention.
As far as the back, I prefer the Brazilian or a 3/4 cut on the butt.

Swimming: 1 -2 inch sides.
Shorts, 5 - 7 inches since I don't wear underwear. Wore them shorter before I stopped wearing briefs under shorts.

For lap swimming I like 1.25 to 2 inch sides. Desmiit swim briefs is what I wear the most and they are 1.25 inch.
For walking I like these short shorts with a built in jockstrap. They are the most comfortable and cost well under 10$ so you can get many of different colors.

I really like the Speedo style briefs with made of polyester or nylon lycra with a 2 or 3 inch waist band, just below my belly button and wedgied in my rear buns showing the lower, half, almost like a thong style swim briefs. The kind , Iv'e worn over the years are like this style and well lined inside, not too tight and allowing breathing and space for one's genitals and possible erections from the gentle feel of the soft snug material. Wearing them when dry for a long time, they really feel comfortable and don't think about having them on. When these Speedo style swim briefs are wet after swimming, the wet clinging material does get me aroused, especially when taking them off. Taking them off really tickle all of my lowers, feeling the soft tight material slowly come off when first uncovering my now erect penis snug and secure in Speedo, then having to get almost off swimsuit unweggied from the rear, then finally peeling them down and off, bearing it all wet or dry. That's the kind of swim suit I really like wearing during the warm summer weather.
