View Full Version : Worst thing ever seen at a pool

Happened to me last year. I'd just finished changing after a swim, stepped out of the cubicle, and saw a father and son walking to the pool. They were both wearing 'shorts' that went below the knee.
How could the father do this to his son? He wouldn't wear gear like that to play football in. How could that be appropriate to swim in?
If I was the pool attendant I would have refused them entry.

Obviously they weren't planning on swimming by the definition you and I use. During open swim at our pool there is little swimming occurring, mainly splashing and screaming. Baggy shorts work fine for that, actual swimmers know better and wear the proper gear. So when you see guys dressed like that you'll have to just accept it.

I was recently on holiday in Malaysia and there were a lot of Arabs staying in my hotel. The Arab men swam in the hotel pool in long shorts while their women didn't, due to being covered head to foot in a gown with only their eyes visible. The western men also swam in long shorts while their women wore bikinis.
I's a funny old world...

There is accommodation for that now where a Moslem woman wishing to swim can purchase an all-over body suit to not be immodest in public.
Whether a husband and/or father would tolerate such recreation where other men are also present and may be in close proximity is another matter - that is for the male intellect and not for particular garments to cope with (the details of which are not specified in the Quoran anyway - just as it does not forbid a woman to drive a car).

You guys should check out our pool. It's owned by the hospital so it is primarily a rehabilition facility and has a hot therapy pool beside the short course. So you get to see a lot of people come and go who are in treatment for various health and physical reasons. Let me put this nicely, we thank our dear lord that there are swimwear options far beyond your preferred. On the plus side our kids get to see pitiful examples of what can happen to people who don't or won't or can't maintain their health. It's a real eye opener if you have a strong stomach. Turn your head if you don't!

Well that was interesting. The writer put a rather bigoted spin on it and comments took over from there but I agree that pool rules come first, especially those dealing with safety and cleanliness. No whacko religion should trump pool rules, that's going too far.

There were women dressed like that in the hotel pool when I stayed in Malaysia recently, even though the pool rules posted said you couldn't wear that much clothing.

There was a girl at my local pool yesterday. Don't usually pay that much attention to others, but she kept climbing out of the pool and standing at the side. Anyway, she wore bikini bottoms with less than one inch sides and they were white, and you could practically see through them. Where do they find the confidence to wear stuff like that?

I have seen two things that made me sick when I saw them. One was a female wearing a thong. When she bent over she had not shaved and there was her hairy ass and it was totally gross!
The other was a man in a speedo. When he walked out to the pool everyone made an audible gasp. His gut hung over his speedo and covered it so much most people thought he was nude. When he turned around his suit was there but so was half of his ass crack. Again Gross.

Worst thing I saw was today. Probably a Pakistani family - a mother and 3 children. All were fully clothed bar one. There should be rules against that. Just doesn't seem hygienic.

This suit looks like underwear rather than swimwear. To me it looks like polyester rather than nylon or Lycra. It doesn't seem to offer much support and the light colour suggests that it will be very see through when wet. It's not tiny or skimpy neither is it Speedo or even speedo. In brief it looks frumpy.
Wearing something frumpy and see through will upset the locals in a private health club. In a country where litigation is the norm there tend to be rules for every eventuality carefully hidden away ready for use. I have never heard of a "2 layer house code", it is something slipped into the rules just in case or written into the blank spaces in the rule book.
On this board we have repeatedly suggested dressing suitably for the location you are visiting. What may be ok for a quiet beach miles from town may upset people at an indoor public pool. Brad Cieslowski misjudged the reaction of the management of his private health club and was asked to leave.

yes it's a funny old world! I blame the fashion industry and certain people there who decide on what people should or should not be wearing. There seems to be a total negativity to anything skimpy for me yet women can wearing the tiniest bikinis and generally people will applaud them- except here in the UK where Victorian attitudes still persist. My wife, who is considerably younger than me will wear the tiniest g-strings/thongs as underwear and tiny bikinis on the beach but doesn't like me in my brief swimwear or underwear. It hurts.

Doesn't like you in brief underwear? Who else is going to know?
Anyway, I wear swim briefs while my wife wears a one-piece and no one complains. It wouldn't bother me if she did wear a bikini, but she seems to lack the confidence.

My wife who wears either a one piece or shorts and a tank top, likes when I wear speedos - I wear an Aussiebum Swish brief or a Tactics swim brief with sides about 1.5 or 2 - I like the low cut in the front. I certainly don't have great abs, but I'm also not overweight and have a pretty flat stomach so I feel OK about the way I look. Neither one of us really cares what others think; we've reached the age when we don't have to worry about that sort of thing. When we've visited France and Italy, I saw many more guys of all ages and more recently, in Oahu last September, more men in bikinis than the last time I was there, 3 years earlier. So, hopefully there is a trend back to speedos.

As I've said over and over, if you want speedos to gain more acceptance, then just start wearing them.
However if you don't think other people accept speedos -and don't wear them yourself- you're creating a self "fulfilling prophecy".
I've also said that you should contact the apparel makers and retailers and tell them you want more traditional styles in men's swimwear and casual wear -IE- short shorts instead of those "half pants". ;)

I agree with CD... just wear them.

Surely it's a simllar type of issue for women at their local pool, in that they predominantly wear one-piece swimwear, so that bikini wearers are very much in the minority? Doubt if that stops them, though.

Being a fairly STR8 guy, I also admire girls in bikinis.
Both sexes look a hell of lot better in skimpy swim suits. :D

I was at the local pool at the weekend. I saw a man leave the pool some distance from me and it appeared he was wearing black briefs with 2" sides, but it could have been less than that. He was rather portly to say the least, and my first reaction was 'yuck!'
However, I reflected for a few seconds and thought 'he's shown a lot of confidence to wear that so should be applauded'.
So maybe the best thing I've seen at a pool.

I agree with D67. Why should any of us judge anyone for what they choose to wear. Bede is right in his conclusion... Best thing at the pool is whatever you feel good in. Life is short, enjoy it.

If the rather portly man at the pool had been wearing black shin length baggy shorts your first reaction would still have been "Yuk". Unless he is so much the norm in your area that he was invisible to you.

Someone a while back showed me a stat that part of the reason men are more likely to drown is simply the baggy swim shorts. I wish i could find the stat. Lol I'd probably drowned last sat if I was wearing baggies. (I should know better than to swim in a riptide while dehydrated)

Well I had to pass my swimming survival certificate swimming in pyjamas, so would it be surprising?

Sounds like a very scary swim experience - what caused the dehydration which (presumably) made you weak and feeling inadequate against the strength of the tide ?
PS: I know that the RNLI publishes water safety advice but not sure whether they actually position themselves in favour of wearing speedos.

I didnt drink water all day. I proceeded to go out swimming. I was having a good time and then as if it came out of nowhere all my energy just got sucked out of me (when you are swimming you sometimes dont realize how much exercise you are getting). I tried to first gradually swim parallel to the shore but I was getting fatigued and the waves were getting bigger. I wasnt too far out and luckily got close enough to touch the sand. When I got to the point I had a good grip on the ground under me I ended up fighting the tide and just about blaked out walking back into the shore. Even the water on my ankles seemed to weigh 40lbs... I stayed at my towel until I had the energy (very little) to walk back to the car and go get some hydration. Not having the extra weight or movement constriction of baggies was part of the reason I was even able to fight the tide.... The problem with riptide is that you cant just float and wait it out is you run out of energy. You have to swim with it. Ive swam at college dehydrated and the same thing happened but in the college pool it is a controlled environment.
It is like running when your body is out of water but continuing to do it because your body doesn't recognize that its temputure and heart rate isn't being elevated the way it would do in an activity on shore.

Actually, if you were wearing baggies in that situation wouldn't you try to remove them? Better to be naked than dead!

Absolutely... It is harder to remove a swimsuit floating in a riptide than you'd think lol.

Might also be a panic factor in this and even gold medallist runner Mo Farah had a brief collapse at the end of his Marathon a couple of weeks back.
Ever had a tilt-test with cardiac monitoring at a clinic ?

I was walking from Cap Ferret to Point de Grave in the Gironde.
I only had a 1 litre (1.75 pint) water bottle with me and was suffering from blisters on my feet.
It got hotter and hotter and I limped slower and slower, at first I took drinks of water, then slurps, then sips and eventually the bottle ran out before I could reach the next ville and campsite.
At the ville I refilled and immediately emptied my bottle at the tennis club, at the beach bar a had a ice slush drink. Reaching the campsite I put up the tent and broke a tent pole through incoherent fumbling, luckily I was able to repair it. I didn't cook dinner as I couldn't face eating anything.
Lying in my tent I heard English voices in the tents around me, I wouldn't need to get help immediately as English speakers would understand when I really needed aid. In the night I needed to go to the toilet block, and wandered around the campsite in the dark trying to find my tent again. The next morning I discovered there were no English speakers in the tents around me, although there were a couple of English boys, brothers, in blue speedos in the toilet block when I went for a shower.
Dehydration and sunstroke can occur very easily even if you are experienced and careful. Always take more water than you need to the beach and try to cool off and find some shade if things start to go wrong.
